This is a fine cabinet-sized Native Copper from the lesser known Mass mine, part of the broader Mass Consolidated mine at Mass City, Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA. The Mass mine commenced in 1856, ceasing operations in 1888, after which it merged to form part of the Mass Consolidated mine in 1899. Native Copper specimens have periodically been found within the old mine dumps. This rich specimen has, at some time, been acid etched to remove the associated Calcite or Quartz thus exposing casts of Native Copper showing the crystallized surfaces of the removed minerals. Some of the convex outer surfaces also appear to show evidence of Native Copper crystals. Ex David Hardman collection.
