This large and heavy sculptural mass of Native Copper has a quite distinctive surface patina - a very bright, but paler rose-orange-pink colour. It is from the Isle Royal mines at Portage Township south of Houghton, Houghton County, Michigan. These mines date to 1852, but throughout their early history struggled to turn a profit. Only when they were operated by the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company after 1909 did they really succeed. Ex David Hardman collection, no. 2103.
