Mottramite is a lead vanadate hydroxide and at the Tsumeb mine in Namibia occurs in a bewildering variety of habits and colours. Mottramite is typically some shade of green at Tsumeb and although this specimen is, it so dark a shade of green it appears jet black. This large miniature or small cabinet specimen forms as a gently curved plate of stacked Mottramite crystals with an appearance more of Descloizite. These two species do form a continuous solid solution series, the Descloizite-Mottramite Series, ranging from the pure lead-zinc Descloizite end member to lead-copper Mottramite. Possibly this specimen lies within this series a little from the pure Mottramite end.
