Socrates mine at Castle Rock Springs, West Mayacmas District, Sonoma Co., California, USA has produced some of the best known Montroydite as deep burgundy red acicular crystals associated with Native Mercury. This miniature specimen from the fine systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) displays a large area of Native Mercury with complex intergrowth of acicular Montroydite, in white vein Quartz. This form of Montroydite is very different to the more frequently seen free-standing acicular crystals spanning open cavities from Socrates mine. A fine, rich example of this rare mercury oxide species.
