This remarkable specimen comes from the famous, short-lived late 1990s discovery of golden amber-coloured Mimetite in Thailand. Originally marketed as from the Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, Thailand, this was a ruse to put off competitors from finding the source, which was later disclosed as Guatomo mine further to the south. A rusty-orange gossanous matrix is liberally carpeted in glossy, resinous, short hexagonal prisms of Mimetite to up to 6 mm in length, but it is the overall scale of this specimen that is most dramatic, reaching 13 cm across, yet remaining in superb condition. This is huge by the standards of most specimens seen from Guatomo mine and so few come to the market now, this really is a magnificent survivor.
