Specimens are so much fun when they have character. This 12.7 cm long Malachite stalactite from Mashamba West mine in the Kolwezi mining district, DR Congo has a really unusual 'knobbly' surface appearance, presenting the look of a scaly creature. Indeed, the slight curvature and swelling at the tip of the stalactite gives the impression of a head, either of a worm, dragon or mythical beast. The bobbly texture seen here is far from normal and makes it a little different. Mashamba West mine is one of the best known localities within this district, having opened in 1978 and produced many stunning mineral treasures. The mine is now part of the Sicomines copper-cobalt project.
