The Dem. Rep. of Congo is renowned for some of the richest Malachite the world has seen. In many respects it has become the modern-day equivalent of the late 18th to early 19th century deposits in Russia that provided the stunning banded material used to fashion the stunning Palace rooms in St. Petersburg. L'Etoile du Congo mine, known in English as The Star of Congo mine, at Lubumbashi has been in operation for over a century and in that time has furnished collections with some marvellous stalactitic specimens of Malachite along with huge blocks of rough Malachite uses for carving. This striking and unusual larger display specimen is like a Malachite club in its shape, but apart from its shape it is its stunning chatoyency that really draws one in for a closer look. Its velvety surface lustre reaches a crescendo around its sides where light illuminates the Malachite internally, providing a dazzling effect. Added to this, texturally, the knobbly surface is something quite different and despite its wonderfully velvety appearance it is in magnificent condition. It comes with a custom-made Sunnywood acryllic display stand, designed to stand the stalactite upright in its most dramatic pose.
