Hematite is a mineral with so many habits, ranging in appearance from a reddish brown ore, through its botryoidal habits to single, blocky crystals associated with Alpine-style mineralisation. From the spectacular mountainous region of Formazza in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province of Piedmont, Italy, an approximately 3 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm, terminated black Hematite crystal stands vertically on a matrix of mixed Quartz, Feldspar and Hematite. A smaller, well developed Hematite crystal, sits behind and adjacent to the larger crystal. The Hematite prisms are complexly striated with linear surface patterns over which translucent, reddish bronze Rutile crystals lie flat. A very fine miniature Hematite with Rutile on Quartz from Piedmont.
