An excellent large cabinet specimen of Specular Hematite crystals richly intergrown with gemmy, colourless pyramidal crystals of Quartz measuring to around 8 mm. This fine specimen was collected in 1977 at Florence mine, located immediately to the south east of the town of Egremont in west Cumbria, England. Specular Hematite, also termed Specularite, is the bladed variety of Hematite and on this specimen covers a 17 x 10 cm veinlet of red-brown Hematite, the underside of which is richly dusted with micro-crystals of Specular Hematite together with Quartz. In 1977 Florence was still an operating mine owned by British Steel, but closed in October 1980. This is a superb example of this classic west Cumbrian material. It will look magnificent on display and is accompanied with the collector’s personal label, that of a highly respected of Northern England mineral collector.
