This is a lovely well-balanced rounded aggregate of the iconic "Kidney Ore" variety of Hematite from the Park mines, at Askam and Ireleath in west Cumbria. This type of Hematite is known the world over from the West Cumbrian iron mining district, but most specimens are vaguely provenanced, making this one much more significant. Specific specimens from the Park mines are extremely rare. The specimen has not had its surface polished like many are, maintaining its dull, rough finish. There are some indentations around the lower edges, presumably where it was extracted, or during transit from the mine, but the 'bubbly' botryoidal form is excellent. At 10 cm tall and 16 cm wide this dome-like specimen makes a great display specimen, but being rich in iron it is heavy, at 4 kg. Consequently, an additional postage charge is likely.
