'Kidney Ore' is an iconic variety of Hematite intrinsically linked to west Cumbria and the iron mines worked there for centuries. This excellent large cabinet display specimen weighs a hefty 3.2 kg and is an impressive demonstration of how this variety of Hematite looks like a kidney. Its natural rounded botryoidal surface looks almost sculpted in form and shows a lovely variation in surface colour from red to purple shades. To add to its already fine credentials, it is from an extremely well provenanced collection and comes from the famous Hodbarrow mine which worked out underneath the sea, eventually collapsing in on itself resulting in impressive surface subsidence features.
