Classic West Cumbrian botryoidal Hematite known by the name of "Kidney Ore" for obvious reasons and with a fine, detailed provenance. The upper display surface of this slightly larger than fist-sized specimen shows an excellent sculptural form. The base is somewhat smoothed by handling and possibly polishing, but the outer 'bubbly' display surfaces maintain great form and lustre. From Pit No. 1 at Hodbarrow mine near Millom, Cumbria. Hodbarrow mine was the largest of the Cumbrian iron mines, producing over 25 million tons of ore and is described in detail in A. Harris' 1970 book - Cumberland Iron: The story of Hodbarrow mine 1855-1968.
