Classic botryoidal Hematite, var. Kidney Ore, from an unusual and superb sounding locality in the West Cumbrian iron orefield. Daylight Hole Vein at Lindal Moor mine conjures up images of miners toiling underground with a shaft of light looking out to the world above. Apart from being from a very precise, little-known occurrence, this specimen displays excellently as a well proportioned 11 cm wide dense botryoidal aggregate. Internally, underneath the specimen the layered structure of the botryoidal mass is clear to see and also shows some nice thin veinlets of red and white presumed quartz, although calcite is also a possibility. Daylight Hole Vein is rarely mentioned in print, but was located approximately 330 m southeast of Whinfield Farm to the north of Lindal in Furness. A fine example of iron ore from Britain's most famous iron-mining district. Due to its weight an additional charge might be made for postage.
