A bright metallic steely blue grey crystal of Hematite measuring to 3.7 cm, displaying a pyramidal form truncated by a flat pinacoid some 2 cm in diameter. The crystal displays multiple faces, some having a bright reflective metallic lustre and those covered with intricate and fascinating growth patterns, a silky lustre. The growth patterns are amazing and the nearest thing I can liken them to is the Widmanst'tten patterns in some meteorites. This terrific miniature is from the Wessels mine, close to the town of Hotazel in Northern Cape Province, South Africa.
