This excellent hand sized specimen of reniform Hematite from the Egremont iron mining district in west Cumbria, England, is a showy cabinet specimen and characteristic of the fine Kidney Ore Hematite which made this area famous. It was still possible to collect Hematite (although probably not as good as this specimen) up until 2007 from underground at Florence mine. However, since its closure, what was once a plentiful and common mineral has now become increasingly rare. This specimen weights 1.852 kg (4.083 lbs) and is almost black in colour, a reddish metallic black. The upper display surface is rounded and lustrous while the base and some sides reveal the inner radial structure. The base and sides have a smooth and rounded habit with a glossy patina, reminiscent of a specimen which has been much handled; probably a treasured possession in some miner's house and often brought out to show visitors. Don not be deterred by these comments as it still remains a superb specimen.
