Based on the attached faded copperplate, hand written label, this is an old time Goethite on Quartz from the Restormel Royal Iron mine at Lostwithiel close to St. Austell in Cornwall. Restormel mine took on its Royal status following a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in September 1846. The Goethite forms thick acicular, well-developed black crystals of bright metallic lustre, principally within a 4 x 1 cm vein associated with Quartz, on a matrix of massive Goethite ore.
