Lead grey cubic crystals of metallic Galena to 2.2 cm displaying interesting surface growth patterns of geometric form. Also scattered over the triangular, olive-green matrix are beautiful gemmy orange-red micro-crystals of ruby Sphalerite to between about 1 and 3 mm. The Ballard mine was operated by the St. Louis Smelting and Refining Co. and is known to have been working in the first half of the twentieth century and possibly beyond this. A showy small cabinet specimen from the Ballard mine at Baxter Springs in the classic Tri-State district of Kansas, USA.
