Although Joplin Field in Tri-State District, Missouri, USA is known for some exceptionally large Galena cubes, sometimes it is the smaller crystals that provide the most satisfaction for display. I certainly think that that is the case here, with this fine smaller cabinet-sized specimen. Upon it, a flat(ish) plate of pale grey, fine-grained siliceous cherty host rock is dotted with wonderfully symmetrical, upstanding crystals of Galena, as grey, matt metallic cubes to 2.2 cm on edge, some of which are developed intergrown in a line, and flattened somewhat nail-head like Calcite crystals, to 2.3 cm across, with colour-zoned opaque cream edges and darker, translucent centres. Also present are a couple of small individual isolated dark brown to black Sphalerite crystals. The Galena and Calcite crystals are the main focus although both Calcite crystals show slight bruising from contact. This is still a very pretty display specimen of this classic association from Joplin Field.
