The still operational Cloud Hill quarry at Breedon on the Hill in Leicestershire has become a modern classic because of the excellent mineral specimens it has produced over recent years. Galena is not common and this small miniature is a typical example, formed from several intergrown crystals, all distorted from the cube to a pseudo-orthorhombic habit. The light grey Galena crystals have rough matt faces; a result of natural etching and probable micro-crystalline Cerussite on their surfaces, while coated in an oxidised layer. This specimen was collected from a mineralised cavern (speleothem) exposed in the quarry face in September 2007.
