Milpo mine in the remote Atacocha mining district in Peru has recently come to the attention of mineral collectors because of the beautiful vibrant green Fluorite crystals many of which are cubo-octahedral in form and associated with golden Pyrite. This superb miniature specimen is really pretty, and displays the rarer association of Fluorite crystals on Quartz matrix, but with small pyritohedron Pyrite crystals for added sparkle. The Fluorite crystal, or more correctly crystal aggregate, is much nearer to octahedral in form, with just the slightest development of the pinacoid faces on each corner. The aggregate of rich green, stepped octahedral crystals reaches 4 x 3.3 cm and perches nicely upon a thin sliver of contrasting grey-white matrix. The front display faces of the Fluorite crystals is excellent with just the very slightest evidence of contact damage, but the rear two sides of the crystal aggregate is cleaved. Mounted upright and with good backlighting, the Fluorite really glows, with a wonderful intensity so distinctive of this new material from Milpo mine.
