The green colour of this Fluorite from the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District in Bavaria, Germany is quite different to most greens that we see in Fluorite specimens from elsewhere. In fact, it almost glows, especially when illuminated from behind. The specimen is large, making a dramatic fine large display specimen. If the wonderful, if somewhat insipid colour is not enough, then focus in on the individual crystal faces on the main surface. The complexity of the crystals is mesmerizing - made up of thousands of stepped faces. Zoom in, and be taken to another world with what I liken to a 'magic-eye' image - repeated patterns of intricate beauty - only in this case there is no need for a hidden image to appear. This effect is accentuated by two sets of internal inclusions - black and red - that provide an outline to the glassy crystals. The red inclusions are believed to be from Cinnabar, although they have not be tested. The black inclusions appear to be another sulphide. Despite not displaying large individual cubic crystals, the fascination of the myriad of stepped crystal faces and the complexity of detail that this produces is quite remarkable. A stunning Fluorite specimen, for its colour, crystal form, and the way these combine. A magical specimen.
