A magnificent, large hand sized cabinet specimen of well crystallised Fluorite from Larkin's quarry at Shannapheasteen, Costelloe, Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Much confusion exists regarding the name and location of this quarry, but it is now known to collectors as Larkin's or Joe Larkin's quarry, or simple The Granite Quarry, Shannapheasteen. This very fine ex-matrix specimen is composed of inter-grown individual cubic Fluorite crystals of between 1.8 and 4 cm on edge and of translucent lavender with occasional lime-green internal patches, grading to a Royal purple core. The crystal faces have a characteristic oily lustre and frequently display circular patches with multicoloured iridescence, similar to smeared oil droplets. The base has a patch of smaller, modified cubic Fluorite crystals to about 7 mm on edge, of exquisite habit and colour. This is a fabulous display specimen of this fascinating occurrence of Fluorite in County Galway.
