A group of mustard-caramel-brown Ettringite crystals cover a pinkish-cream porous carbonate matrix from the Wessels mine at Hotazel in Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The largest crystal measures 4.5 x 0.9 x 0.5 cm and the two main crystals are well terminated. On examination of the bases of a few crystals, the dark coloured Ettringite is seen to be a 0.5 mm thick rind on what are more glassy, colourless to pale lemon-yellow crystals which form the prism cores. An interesting specimen and a good example of Ettringite, a hydrous calcium aluminium sulphate.
