Diopside is usually considered to be a rock-forming mineral, but much in the same way as the gem mineral Tanzanite is a variety of another rock-forming mineral - Zoisite - Diopside can also produce gemmy, or superb crystals worthy of display, albeit rarely. This dramatic Diopside crystal from the Shigar Valley in Skardu District, Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan is not only exceptional in its form, but amazing in its size. Perched dramatically on a small sliver of matrix it rises upwards like a monolith, as a 6.5 cm tall dark green crystal with sharp sculptural edges. It comes with a custom-made display stand to present it in all its glory.
