Descloizite is a mineral which never fails to amaze in its seemly endless habits and crystal forms. This specimen, from the Berg Aukas mine at Grootfontein in Namibia, is a mass of beautifully developed curved spear head crystals, typically to over 2 cm tall, all with stepped edges and prism faces. What makes this rather unusual is that each crystal is opaque metallic black with a brilliant lustre, but through the central section of each is a glassy and translucent chocolate-brown band, forming a vertical ribbon. This would make a terrific New Year addition for any collector of this remarkable species.
