Sometimes overlooked because of its colourless, glassy appearance, Datolite is actually quite an unusual species and really well-formed crystals are quite rare, even at the classic sites most of which have been inaccessible for many decades. The state of Connecticut in USA has more than its fair share of top localities for excellent Datolite crystals, most of which are located in Hartford County. The town of East Granby in the north of the county has two famous localities - Roncari quarry and State Route 20 road cut. We don't know which of those localities this fine miniature specimen comes from, but it is from David Hardman's collection who started collecting during the 1960s. Upon it, several, very well formed, glassy, pale cream coloured terminated Datolite crystals sit on a bed of coarsely crystallized Datolite. The largest Datolite crystal reaches 2 cm in length and presents a great flattened, almost lenticular, monoclinic form.
