This interesting pale blue coloured Corundum - the variety Sapphire - comes from the classic locality of the Ilmen Mountains, Chelyabinsk Oblast', Southern Urals, Urals Region, Russia. It really isn't very often that you see a specimen from there and although this Sapphire is not what you would term 'gem' quality it is historically and scientifically important material, especially with the associated Columbite-(Fe). The Sapphire crystals here are quite interesting, being clusters of stacked broad flattened, almost tabular crystals. A small amount of white matrix attaches another group of Sapphire crystals to the main aggregate. There is some damage to the edges of this specimen, but this is more a historic rarity.
