A characteristic example of a hexagonal plate of plumb purple Corundum, variety Ruby, from Madagascar and although not known for certain, is probably from the Ampanihy District in the Atsimo-Andrefana Region, almost at the southern tip of the island. Mounted vertically on a square acrylic base, the Ruby is essentially opaque but with a translucency closer to its edges. The faces are traversed by parallel internal planes of slightly varying colour, a characteristic feature of such Corundum crystals.
