This excellent miniature of well developed, sooty-black Chalcocite crystals richly surrounded by drusy mounds of velvety textured deep green Malachite is from Carn Brea mine, Illogan. This mine lies on the north-western flank of Carn Brea, the granite ridge which dominates the landscape and skyline between Camborne and Redruth. Carn Brea mine is a sett ; a group of mines which became amalgamated around 1831. It produced a suit of very fine minerals and is particularly known for its crystallised Bornite. Good quality Malachite is not common from here, so this combination with good Chalcocite crystals of various habits is a great and representative example. The Malachite and Chalcocite cover a gossan veinstone of mixed granular Quartz and Chalcocite.
