A number of mines surround the historic mining town of Horn' Slavkov in the Karlovy Vary Region of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Simplistically, these can be divided into a uranium ore deposit and a tin-tungsten deposit, yet the overall mineralogy is complex and of the almost one hundred known species, many are rare minerals. This specimen is however something very familiar, Cassiterite, and is a superb example of a perfectly twinned crystal. An ex. matrix miniature, the Cassiterite is opaque jet-black with a highly reflective metallic lustre, over which are sparsely scattered granular Quartz grains of lemon-tinged cream. The Cassiterite twin is bisected by deep re-entrant faces all of which display the twinning crystallography magnificently. This specimen comes with the previous German collector's card label who accessioned it in 1984.
