Tsumeb mine is well-known for its many and varied forms of Calcite crystals. This fine specimen balances simplicity in form with class. Comprising a large (7.6 cm corner to corner) individual rhombic crystal, it is the added touches that really create the beauty in this piece. Firstly, ones eyes are drawn to the scattering of small (1 to 2 mm) white Dolomite crystals upon, and slightly within, the surface of the main rhombic crystal face of the Calcite. Secondly, reddish inclusions of Hematite can be seen concentrated in one of the corners of the Calcite rhomb. From the front this crystal is immaculate and displays exceptionally well. The rear reveals slight stepping in the rhombic surface where a small part to the crystal has cleaved away, but these cleaved surfaces run parallel to the crystal faces and so blend in perfectly. A wonderful individual Calcite crystal from the important Weyand collection.
