Black Ox mine is one of Derbyshire's lesser-known mineral localities, situated only about 1 km to the southwest of Matlock and a little north of Masson Hill, both familiar names in the world of mineralogy. From Black Ox we have an unusual 1.6 cm thick, cleaved block of Calcite displaying a pale honey yellow translucent to semi-transparent outer crust with a large area of transparent, colourless Calcite surrounded distinct darkened zones of included micro-crystals of brassy Chalcopyrite. A most fascinating and unusual Derbyshire specimen.
