This small cabinet specimen presents quite an unusual contrast between a bed of parallel white Quartz crystals and orange Calcite. It is from the famous Cavnic mine in Romania which is well-known for intriguing and unusual forms of Calcite and other carbonates, including Rhodochrosite. There is the strong possibility that the orange crystals here are Siderite, or at least iron-rich, but the main aggregate appears to have the overall form of a cluster of scalenohedral Calcite crystals upon which the smaller, orange, iron-rich carbonate crystals have deposited. A quite distinctive piece from this important historic mining area.
