Geevor mine is well known for its remarkable suite of fine Calcite and Quartz specimens and this is a great example. The upper surface of a flat plate of milky Quartz has developed as 2 to 4 cm tall Quartz crystals all with salmon to terracotta pink surfaces. The morphology of every Quartz crystal is that of a chisel edged termination rather than a pointed apex, in which two opposite faces have grown wide against each other. The Calcite has been deposited preferentially, coating three faces from one direction; viewed from the opposite direction, the remaining three faces (and terminations) are free of Calcite. The Calcite forms as foliated curved plates, usually saddle-shaped and up to about 5 mm in various shades of cream and mid salmon pink. It's a splendid cabinet specimen from the Coronation Lode at Geevor mine, Pendeen, St. Just Cornwall.
