This is a wonderful old-timer, probably dating to the 1950s or 1960s. The Old Dominion mine in Globe Hills Mining District, Gila County, Arizona, USA is a famous one with a memorial park dedicated to it. Discovered in 1874 the mine passed through several owners eventually closing in 1957. Small cabinet in size, this specimen displays the classic association of finely crystallized green Malachite encrusted with small glossy white, to colourless Calcite crystals. In one small area where the Calcite coverage is incomplete the underlying Malachite can be viewed. Beneath the Malachite is a rusty orange gossanous layer of iron oxides on a massive white matrix.
