Good Cumbrian Calcites never fail to please and this fine pair of crystals is attributed to Stank mine by Barrow-in-Furness, in south west Cumbria, England. The ex-matrix specimen comes with a Hamel Mining & Minerals (Los Angeles) label typed “Calcite, Cumberland, England”, to which someone has added in pen, “Stank Mine”, which is quite possible. At first glance it appears as a single crystal, but is actually two intergrown prisms in perfect parallel alignment with partly intergrown terminations. The Calcite is completely colourless and varies from transparent to gemmy. The crystals display characteristic internal reticulated cleavage planes and both terminations are deeply striated, so typical of west Cumbrian material.
