Quite different to many West Cumbrian Calcite specimens, this cabinet-sized geode-like crystal-lined cavity in beige-coloured dolomitized limestone from Hodbarrow mine is dominated by white to very pale pink shallow angled platy rhombic Calcite crystals. Rising like razor-sharp 'fins' into the void of the cavity, these glassy crystals interlock with each other to produce a fine display. The cavity extends right through the specimen although not with 'line of sight'. Hodbarrow mine is certainly not one of the well-known Calcite-producing mines in Cumbria, but was a very famous mine historically, making this an unusual historic piece.
