Usually, Pallaflat mine Calcites are reasonably bulky, hence more naturally suited to the larger end of the specimen size range for collectors. This little beauty is without doubt a perfectly scaled-down thumbnail version, featuring two complex scalenohedral, colourless and gemmy Calcite crystals to 1.5 cm, attached to a little iron rich, rusty brown matrix. The lower sections of these prisms, together with Calcite attached to the matrix, are included with finely disseminated sooty black iron compounds. A charming thumbnail Calcite from Pallaflat mine by the village of Bigrigg in west Cumbria, England, featuring all the characteristic charms of its much bigger cousins!
