A classic Calcite, also known as the variety Sand Calcite, from the famous Fontainebleau quarries at Seine-et-Marne, Ile-de-France, France, about 60 km to the south-southeast of Paris. The Calcite has developed in spiralling circles of overlapping, offset stacked rhombic crystals, each with a fine sucrosic sandy texture with the feel of fine sandpaper. The overall structure is that of a rose with many layers of petals. The specimen has been damaged in three areas, excluding its point of attachment, but these allow the internal structure and mineralogy to be studied. A great Fontainebleau Calcite.
