A good size cabinet specimen of transparent to semi-transparent, colourless Calcite crystals with a milky-white hue cover a hidden plate of milky chocolate-brown limonitic and Hematite-rich matrix. This superb specimen is from the famous Pallaflat mine, about half a mile SW of the village of Bigrigg near Egremont, west Cumbria, England. Typical of the west Cumbrian iron mine, the Calcite forms 1 to 2 cm long stubby scalenohedral crystals with an excellent glassy lustre, great clarity and mirror-smooth faces. None of the numerous crystals show any sign of damage or even bruising, making this a wonderful Calcite fit for any display.
