There is no disputing that Colombia is the world-leader for gem-quality Emerald, both as crystals and rough and has been for over a century. The best crystals, when placed alongside those from other world occurrences, are simply leagues ahead in their class, but are worth more than their equivalent weight in gold. This magnificent gem crystal on matrix is exceptional in its intense emerald-green colour, superb transparency, and wonderful prismatic form, fully terminated with a flat pinacoid face at its summit. Added to this it is unusually unrepaired, and attached to a small cluster of well-defined greyish, waxy, bladed Calcite crystals. At 2 cm in length it is a significant size for such a perfect crystal. It is from Muzo mine in Boyacá Department, perhaps the most famous of all of Colombia's Emerald mines, a mine which was considerable, even in the early years of the 20th century. This beautiful large thumbnail/small miniature specimen is a touch of class and will elevate most display cases with its charm.
