Classic Elk Creek amber coloured Baryte crystals sit on a flat bed of creamy yellow Calcite crystals. More than ten well-formed bladed gemmy-translucent crystals of Baryte measuring to 2.6 cm lie at an angle to the Calcite matrix, the combination of habits and colours make a striking specimen. These well-known specimens form in concretions within the Pierre shale, named for Fort Pierre, then close to where this stratigraphic sequence was first described in 1862. A beautiful specimen of Baryte with Calcite from South Dakota. Ex Werner Paar Collection.
