This classic English Baryte from the famous Frizington area in the West Cumbrian iron mining district actually has a fascinating history from its time in the USA. It is a short, but stocky, well-formed amber coloured twinned prismatic crystal. The front face has a nice bright lustre but there is a little wear to the summit of the crystal as is often the case with these older specimens. Accompanying the specimen are four old labels, one of which is unidentified. The others reveal an interesting history. It was sold by Schortmann's Minerals from their (two brothers) pre-1960 address in Easthampton, Mass. It also passed through Minerals Unlimited in Berkeley, California when it was owned by Ralph Merrill (after 1954) and was in the private collection of David B. Grigsby (1920-1994) who also worked at Minerals Unlimited, but left in 1954.
