A large white hedgehog springs to mind on seeing this quite amazing and spectacularly crystallised Baryte from Settlingstones mine in the Tyne Valley of Northumberland. The location of this mine is quite remote within the Northern Pennine Orefield; roughly halfway between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne. This chunky hand specimen is formed from broad, spearpoint crystals of Baryte to about 2.5 cm tall, up to 2 cm wide and 1 cm deep, all coated in a snow-white chalky Baryte crust. Where this crust is naturally chipped-away, glassier Baryte can be seen beneath. A superb example of characteristically classic Baryte from Settlingstones mine, Northumberland.
