This fine large cabinet specimen is a colossus of a blue Baryte from the West Cumbrian iron mining district. Almost entirely Baryte, this linear aggregate of large compactly grown bladed Baryte crystals looks superb mounted vertically. A small amount of Hematite on the back of the Baryte crystals provides reassurance - as if it is required - that this is from the West Cumbrian iron mines, but ultimately large blue Baryte aggregates like this are usually linked back to Cumbria. Most of the bladed Baryte crystals are aligned parallel, or nearly so, and the largest reaches over 5.5 cm in length. There is some damage to crystals around the periphery, but this is usual for specimens from this mining area, most of which were collected over a century ago. However, the closer you look, the more crystals you see that are in fact intact, in a role reversal. The colour, a lovely pale pastel blue is of a very high quality for Cumbria and the lustre is a a fine glassy to resinous one, like the best Baryte from this district. A large, impressive display Baryte from this all-time classic region. Ex University of Arizona Department of Geology. Weighing in at over 1.8 kg there will be an additional charge for postage.
