Sometimes mines are named after their owner, a local town, or perhaps a landmark, but how many can lay claim to being named after a mineralogical feature such as blue balls of Azurite - well Blue Ball mine at Globe in Arizona can! This two-part specimen - a split geode of Azurite - is a classic from Blue Ball mine and reminds me a lot of fossil collecting where you collect the part and counterpart pieces of a fossil. Here it is the two halves of the geode. Combined, the two parts make a thumbnail specimen, but it displays wonderful texture with a rough crystallized dark blue outer edge, paler blue internal zone and central dark blue glossy crystal-lined vug.
