Alabandite is a rare manganese sulphide and is one of the iconic minerals from the Zinc Corporation mine at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The Alabandite forms a pencil-like rod measuring approximately 5.2 x 0.7 x 0.7 cm of bundled, sooty-black acicular crystals. These contrast nicely against the bubbly, flesh-pink botryoidal Calcite on which they rest, this in turn covering a light grey fine granular matrix. A terrific example of Alabandite and of unusual habit from Broken Hill.
