The Tilly Foster Iron mine was the subject of a special issue of the Mineralogical Record; Vol. 47, No. 6, November-December 2016, by Wendell E. Wilson and Stephen L. Nightingale. The Magnetite forms as several large blocky, dull lead grey crystals over a matrix of Antigorite, a laminated mineral within the phyllosilicate serpentine group. The Tilly Foster Iron mine worked a large magnetite deposit which was discovered in 1810.  The mine operated until 1897, but was closed following a tragic accident in which 13 miners were killed in a rock slide.
