{"product_id":"fluorite-75","title":"FLUORITE","description":"People tend to think of Heights mine near Westgate in Weardale for its extremely glassy deep emerald-green Fluorite as it was the main sources of high quality glassy twinned emerald-green crystals after the closure of Middlehope Shield mine in the 1860s up until the mine adits were sealed by the neighbouring quarry company in 1979. However, the mine also produced other colours, and colourless Fluorite too. This extremely well-crystallized colourless Fluorite is richly endowed with sharp interpenetrant twinned crystals individually reaching 2 cm on edge and if you look carefully you will see that there are small colourless bipyramidal Quartz crystals scattered upon the surface too. Despite being colourless, in direct sunlight the crystals turn slightly purple and under longwave UV light this specimen explodes into life. Its fluorescence under UV light is extremely attractive, as the crystals do not glow a uniform violet colour, but display internal zoning in a somewhat ethereal way. I have looked really carefully at this one and I cannot see any damage to the main Fluorite crystals, it is pristine. The matrix is ironstone.
