Brazil is probably the best-known source of well-formed Euclase crystals having been first described from there in 1792 and now known from at least 20 different pegmatites across Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia states. Blue and green tinted crystals are the rarest of types and command extremely high prices, but any significant sized well-formed crystal is a rarity for this gem species. At 4.4 cm tall, this individual, gem clear, colourless, terminated monoclinic crystal from the Conselheiro Pena area in Minas Gerais state is a substantial piece. It displays a sharp, sloping termination and excellent classic vertical striations from growth-lines up its prism sides. The lower edges of the crystal are irregular and rough from where it was previously attached to matrix, with slight cloudy inclusions just inside its lowermost section from the surrounding minerals it was in contact with. For the most part this crystal is optically extremely fine, although it does contain intriguing minor, black, needle-like inclusions down one side. These are most likely small tourmaline crystals.
